PUBLIC PROTESTS & DEMONSTRATIONS

Upcoming events

It has now been nine months since the Region first threatened the landowners of 770 acres along Bleams and Nafziger Roads with expropriation to make way for an unprecedented mega-industrial site. This prolonged and unsettling ordeal has deeply affected landowners, neighbors, Wilmot Township residents, and beyond.

Nine months is an incredibly long time to be left in limbo. Despite countless public actions and demonstrations demanding transparency, adherence to basic rules, and accountability, taxpayers remain in the dark. The continued secrecy surrounding this issue is not just frustrating—it’s unjust.

Consider the Region of Waterloo’s actions: shredding a healthy food crop with no explanation or justification, and denying us the opportunity to review a proper report. The acres now sit bare, the once-vital farmland soil exposed to wind and water erosion, slowly wasting away. What’s more, our political leaders have flip-flopped on key issues, from the risk of soil degradation to the need for transparency. This indecision and secrecy weigh heavily on the families currently farming and living in Wilmot Township – particularly the farmers trying to plan for next year’s crops and trying to run successful businesses not even sure if they will have been expropriated by Spring or left in limbo for years as Donald Trump’s chaos stalls any sort of timely decisions.

Being dragged along for this long is more than unfair—it’s a failure of leadership. The longer we’re left without answers, the greater the frustration and uncertainty. Yet, our fight is not over.

We need your support to continue pressing our elected officials to do what is right, declare we are an UNWILLING community and abandon this absurd location for a mega-industrial development. Please join us at the following upcoming events:

Upcoming Council Meetings - Join us at the next Region of Waterloo Council meeting this Wednesday, December 11th at 7:00pm where we will have strong delegations speaking on the Wilmot Land Assembly, and also on Monday, December 16th at the Township of Wilmot where we will be presenting hundreds of petitions to Wilmot Council and have other delegations for the Fight For Farmland.

Region of Waterloo Council Meeting: 150 Fredrick Street East, Kitchener - Wednesday, December 11th - Council Meeting starts at 7:00pm

Wilmot Township Council: 60 Snyder’s Road West, Baden - Monday, December 16th - Council Meeting starts at 7:00 pm

Due to winter weather and early, dark nights we won’t have any rallies or protests in advance of either of these meetings though we encourage you to come in-person to the Council Chambers for the meetings to show your support for the delegations.

Wilmot Ward 2 Townhall Meeting

Councillor Kris Wilkinson is inviting all Wilmot Ward 2 residents to a Townhall Meeting on Saturday, December 14, 2024 from 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM at the St. Agatha Community Centre, 1791 Erbs Rd, St. Agatha, ON N0B 2L0

Agenda Highlights:

  • Updates on the 2025 Wilmot Township Draft Budget

  • Discussion of the Petersburg Distribution Water System

  • Open Q&A Session for community input

Wilmot Township Staff are proposing a staggering and unprecedented 51% tax increase – adding potentially hundreds or even thousands of dollars to your annual property tax bill.  This meeting is a chance to learn more, share your thoughts, ask questions, and stay informed about the future of Ward 2 and Wilmot Township.

It is also an important opportunity to reinforce that we are an unwilling host for this proposed mega-industrial site that could significantly add to municipal financial woes as history has shown that these large-scale developments often have considerable costs and subsidies borne by local municipalities and existing taxpayers.

Thank you for standing with us in this fight for farmland and fairness. Together, we can demand better and ensure that our voices are heard.
