51% Wilmot Tax Increase
Wilmot Township has proposed an unprecedented 51% property tax increase for the coming year, raising serious concerns about financial planning and transparency. This hike, the largest in Canada, would add hundreds or even thousands of dollars to residents’ annual tax bills—and it doesn’t account for costs related to the controversial mega-industrial land assembly plan.
Despite calls for accountability, no public meetings or financial studies have been disclosed regarding the proposed industrial site. There is no evidence suggesting this project will benefit the municipality and, instead, it risks exacerbating Wilmot’s financial challenges.
Upcoming Meetings:
Special Council Meeting: Tuesday, Jan. 7, 7:00 PM at Wilmot Council Chambers, Baden (to hear feedback on the budget and tax increase).
Ward 1 Town Hall: Thursday, Jan. 9, 7:00–9:00 PM at New Dundee Community Centre, hosted by Councillor Stuart Cressman.
Residents are encouraged to attend, speak up, and demand transparency. It’s time to declare that Wilmot is an unwilling host and abandon this costly and uncertain mega-industrial project before financial troubles deepen further.
Strategic Planning for Activist Group
We need to elevate our efforts against the proposed Wilmot Land Assembly by engaging more groups, expanding farmland protection efforts in Wilmot and across Ontario, and advocating for measures like Greenbelt expansion to restore long-term planning certainty. The loss of the Regional Official Plan on January 1 underscores the urgency of this fight.
In December, dozens of citizens, activists, and groups united to form a new community organization dedicated to opposing the mega-industrial site. The next planning meeting will focus on mapping out strategies and next steps.
